Peptitler (Grekçe: πεπτίδια; “bayağı sindirilebilirler”) teşhismlanmış bir düzende, α-amino asitlerin birbirine bentlanmasıyla oluşan endamsız polimerlerdir.[1] Bir amino asit kalıntısı ile ötekisi arasındaki bağ bir “amit bağ” yahut peptit bağı olarak bilinir.[1]

Tetrapeptit (Oligopeptit)
Proteinler polipeptit molekülleridir (yahut çok sayıda polipeptit alt birimi barındırır). üs üstelik peptitlerin endamsız, polipeptitlerin/proteinlerin ise uzun olmasıdır.[1]

Protein sentezi esnasında her amino asit, vesair amino asite daima, kırılmayan bir polimer olan polipeptid zincirleriyle bentlanır. Polipeptid konstrüksiyonsına acımasızlan amino asitlerin her biri konstrüksiyonya peptid bentlarıyla bentlanır. Peptid bağının oluşumu esnasında amino asitlerden birinin amino grubu ile diğerinin karboksil grubu, aradan bir kez çıkması sonucu birleşirler.[1]

Vasati bir polipeptit zinciri 450 amino asitten oluşur.[1] Bilindik en uzun polipeptit, ortalama 27,000 amino asitten oluşan, kas dokusunda mevcut “titin”dir. Polipeptid zincirine acımasızlan amino asitlere kalıntı (residue) adı verilir.[1] Zincirin bir ucundaki kalıntı, bağ yapmamış, muaf amino grubu barındırır ve N ucu olarak adlandırılır. Aynı şekilde zincirin vesair ucundaki muaf α-karboksil grubu olan kalıntıevet C ucu adı verilir.
